PATHOLOGICAL GAIT
Pathological gait is a gait pattern that differs from the physiological gait pattern. It is the result of neurological conditions in general, the most common of which is Cerebral Palsy (CP). Dysfunctions of the nervous system result in a lack of selective motor control (movement en block), muscles weakness, the presence of primitive reflexes and sensory problems. In addition, imbalances between agonist and antagonist muscles and hypotonia, mainly of the trunk, result in abnormal posture, both sitting and standing. Pathological compensations are produced, leading to an abnormal gait pattern.
The most common form of CP is spastic syndrome of the type of bilateral spastic paralysis (spastic diplegia). Increased limited motion and contractility of the muscles, as well as a high presence of deep reflexes, cause joints deformities, stiffness and abnormal posture. Lack of ability to balance the body results in an assistive, wide stance, bending of the knees and crossing of the legs. Significant forward tilt of the pelvis results in contractures of the hip joints. As the child grows, the deformities worsen and the internal rotation of the hips becomes severely fixed, causing difficulty in moving and assuming other lower positions like sitting.
In order to prevent the patient from becoming completely immobile, physiotherapy is necessary. Properly performed exercises using the Bobath or Vojta concepts, as well as systematic maintain of the upright position, allow the muscles to remain elastic and maintain optimal joint range of movement. In order to passively maintain the effects of the therapy, OKD-33 paediatric lower limb derotation straps are recommended.
Product’s description:
OKD-33 Paediatric derotation straps are professional medical device offering correct gait pattern for children suffering from neurological disorders.
Made of elastic straps, offer lower limbs alignment, prevents against muscles contractures and joint deformations.
OKD-33 paediatric brace is made of two elements: trunk part and attached derotations straps.
Trunk part is made of skin-friendly fabric UniTape™ .
Trunk element is equipped with innovative comfort foam pad made of SoftComfort™. It is designed for reducing the pressure and increasing the comfort of use.
UniTape™ is a technological orthopedic lamination with high durability with double-sided self-gripping function. UniTape™ is very thin and easy to attach what allows to fit the braces precisely.
SoftComfort™ - a material specially designed to relieve very delicate places on the patient's body. The cover knit used in the production is made in such a way that it can come into contact with very sensitive skin. This raw material has the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certificate and complies with the European REACH standard. The structure of the material consists of a very soft comfort foam laminated with a delicate cover knit. The fabric has a perforation that facilitates the flow of air through the material and allows the skin to breathe. The SoftComfort™ material is perfect for the production of linings relieving the rigid and inflexible elements of orthopedic orthoses.
What is more, the trunk pad is equipped with orthopaedic stays that increase stabilization and prevent the belt from “rolling”. The trunk part offers additional posture-correcting function, preventing excessive forward bending of the trunk and positioning the body’s point of gravity in the correct place. This solution helps to reduce the abnormal gait pattern known as crouch gait.
Derotation hip straps OKD-33 are made of skin friendly orthopaedic AirRubber III.
AirRubber III™ has unidirectional elasticity. It can be stretched, increasing the length, not width, what improves compression. Between the braids air flows freely and skin can breathe. In addition in high compression, these rubber braids provide a gentle massage for skin. Our orthopedic rubber is very friendly for skin.
This rubber has the unique properties of unidirectional elasticity, so that it can be freely stretched to length, but at the same time ensures that the lower limbs are properly maintained in symmetry, even in cases of large muscles contractures and joints deformities.Derotation straps are designed to keep the lower limbs symmetrical, provide alignment and prevent muscular contractures and joint deformities. The straps reduce pathological internal rotation of the hips, increasing mobility and maintaining a normal gait pattern. Attached to the abdominal pad, they provide fully adjustable compression and allow the limb to be smooth positioned according to the patient’s therapeutic needs. What’s more, the straps end in a special Velcro fastener that allows them to be freely cut to length and reused. This solution ensures excellent therapeutic positioning of the child’s lower limbs.Sizes
